We had the pleasure of interviewing Preemal, and here's what she had to say:

1.A brief intro of yourself

Hello, I am Preemal Serrao. I'm a singer/ Songwriter from Mangalore.

I am a data analyst by profession and a very passionate musician. Aside from music, I enjoy painting/sketching and ballroom dancing. I am also fond of Studio Ghibli animated films, cats, and dogs

2.When and how did you start the music journey ?

I began singing in choirs at the age of seven.

My mother has been a member of the parish church choir for almost 30 years. I recall her taking me to senior choir sessions when I was a kid. I used to stay to listen and finally started singing Alto in the seniors choir with my mum and other girls my age. I also joined the Children's Choir. These are my earliest musical memories

3. How has your journey been ever since ?

Music has been an integral part of my life since a young age and that has never changed. Because of my involvement in church choirs, school, and other musical activities, I've always been in a musically expanding atmosphere. Choirs piqued my interest in learning keyboard/piano, so I enrolled in lessons.

Despite the fact that I never really focused on developing my vocals until the 2020 lockdown. I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I progressed from covering music on Instagram to writing songs now

4. How have you grown as a musician ?

The more I realize how wide music is, the more I'm excited to learn.

Throughout the pandemic, I came across so many wonderful artists and singers online, and watching them perform what they do inspired me to improve. So I began training my vocals using any and all tools I could find on the internet, YouTube etc. This effort was well worth it, in my opinion. My vocals improved drastically and this gave me a lot of confidence to perform live . At the same time, I taught myself to play guitar and ukulele. I am now learning vocals at the Goa Jazz Academy. I began penning down ditties and have been dabbling with songwriting for quite some time now. From covering songs on Instagram and YouTube to writing my own sure has been a long way.

5.Your achievements so far

I still have a lot left to accomplish, however if I must mention. I'm glad I decided to release my first single, "I'll be watching you," in November 2022. The music outperformed my expectations, which sure feels like an achievement. All through my journey I took part in many singing competitions conducted in and around Mangalore and won quite a few of them.

As an ambivert, I feel very comfortable singing from my room, and the pandemic allowed me to do so. Thanks to the internet, I got noticed/reposted by a few well-known personalities in the music industry, such as Cecilia Krull (Spanish singer who sang the popular theme song from Money Heist), Nova miller, Warner music India, and others.

6. What are your plans for the future in this field ?

I've gotten fond of the idea of writing melodies and telling stories through music. I'm exploring and learning as I go along. I am looking to improve as a songwriter and hope to release more of my own music in the near future

7.What’s the most memorable moment of your musical experience till date ?

Performing live in this café one day , a little girl maybe 4 or 5 years old just comes in front of me stands and stares as i sing my favorite songs to the crowd. She stood there for a song. Honestly small gestures like these where in some way I find out that my music makes a little if not a big difference is a big deal for me.
